Buddy needs a FURever Home- ADOPTED 9/15

DSC_0969

( Update- Buddy was adopted 9/2015/!)

My name is Buddy! I am a 3 year old puppy(7/4/2012). I came to BRBR via owner surrender by a military family. They took good care of me and taught me to be a very disciplined dog.  I respond very well to voice command and correction.  I am excellent on a leash and love to run!

I am currently living with my foster family in Raleigh, NC.  They are really nice people.  I share my house with two skin kids ( pre-teen and teen) and two boxers Potter and Lucy. I love lucy(female).  I am trying to get along with Potter(male). It is probably best if I go to a home with no males.  My foster family really loves me.  They constantly remark how I am such a good dog.  I have a great disposition to be so young.   I love to play with my FURsiblings but I am also content laying on the bed beside my Foster mom and dad as they work.  I am crate trained and typically sleep in there at night time.  I also like to sleep in my skin sisters  room.  I like being with my people.

I am a really handsome fella.  The humans always comment on how good looking I am.  I am tall and lean.  My insides are full of springs. I can bound up really high when I get excited but I know not to jump on my people.  My people don’t allow me on the furniture and I am only allowed on the bed if you invite me.  I am good at following the rules.  I am a great dog!  I would love to meet you!

Baxter...what is not to love

Baxter…what is not to love

My name is Baxter! I am a 2 year old puppy. I came to BRBR via owner surrender.  I was surrendered because the people who had me had too many pets.  I was neutered and very skinny.  I was not on monthly heart worm medicine so I am heart worm positive.  It really does not slow me down at all.  I am starting treatment in March.

I am currently living with my foster family in Raleigh, NC.  They are really nice people.  I share my house with two skin kids ( pre-teen and teen) and two boxers Potter and Lucy. We all get along great and I love them all very much. They would keep me but they really need to keep a spot open in their house to foster dogs like me. My foster parents cannot believe how well behaved I am for only being 2 years  old. I love to play with my FURsiblings but I am also content laying on the bed beside my Foster mom and dad as they work.  I am crate trained and typically sleep in there at night time.  I also like to sleep in my skin sisters  room.  I need to see one of my people.

I can bound up really high when I get excited but I know not to jump on my people.  I just tall enough my nose can smell all the good stuff on the kitchen counters.  My people put stuff up there to tease me.  I like to steal stuff every once in a while.  I learned it from my fursister Lucy. She is always in trouble.  I also love toys and balls.

Twin Cities Marathon & Another Mother Runner CONNECTION!

9th State and 14th Marathon! Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, Oct 6, 2013

TClogo

Why Twin Cities?  I lost count of how many times I was asked this question leading up to the marathon and once we arrived in MSP (Minneapolis-St.Paul).  “You came from NC to MN for the marathon?  Wow!”  Yep,Twin Cities Marathon has been on my list of “must dos” since I decided to conquer all 50 States…before I die, or die trying. Little side note- RIP, Joy Johnson, 86,  whom died a day after running her 25th  NYC Marathon. What an inspiration! I always tell my family, If I die running, know I died doing what I love.

Bart Man! Big Sur Expo 2013

Bart Man! Big Sur Expo 2013

Back to Twin Cities- Bart Yasso, whom I may be a tiny bit obsessed with, raved about Twin Cities in his book My Life On the Run. If by the way, you have not read this book you are totally missing out. After reading about just a few of Bart’s 1,000+ competitive adventures and being thoroughly entertained, I decided any events he put on a  “must dos” list would be added to my bucket list.  Thanks BART! Your recommendations have not failed me yet.

Additionally my fav gals, Sarah and Dimity of AnotherMotherRunner.com (whom I am a self proclaimed “SUPER FAN”), raved about their 2012 Twin Cities Marathon Weekend experience.  Little did I know, prior to registration and arrival, we would share a very special AMR connection. More on that later I promise…

So, Twin Cities Marathon landed on my 2013 race calendar.  Laura (my 50 States partner,  BRF, and recent newlywed) was consumed in her hectic personal life and for the first time in three years could not commit to a fall race. The beauty of our running relationship is that when we decide to do a race we don’t deliberate and ponder we “JUST DO IT” often via just text communication.

Luckily, my long time buddy Leigh, intrigued by my 50 states quest, was ready to tackle her second marathon.  No convincing needed she signed up, booked her flights and our hotel! MN Bound!

My second recruit,BRF and Raleigh-CrossFit buddy Katherine, begrudgingly agreed to tackle Twin Cities (her 3rd marathon) if I would do Tough Mudder, Charlotte, NC with her in Oct.  Being an endorphin junkie, perhaps under the influence of an endorphin high, I did not hesitate and signed up for Tough Mudder.  AFTER, signing up I viewed the videos….Artic Enima, electrocution, etc. What had I gotten myself into? Clearly, I had not learned my lesson. (Pine Mountain 40 Beatdown)  Oh well, seemed like a great trade off and opportunity for a new adventure. Sadly, Katherine, fell victim to an ITband injury and had to cancel running Twin Cities 😦   On a happier note, we did conquer and survive Tough Mudder- Charlotte on 11/3.  Blog post coming soon!

Leigh and I arrived in Minneapolis on Friday afternoon and headed straight to our hotel, Residence Inn at The Depot, walking distance to the start line!  We unpacked and laid out all our running gear (a running travel tradition). Nothing was forgotten…always a good sign!  Ready for lunch we walked across the street to The Crooked Pint.  I promise not to bore you with what we ate all weekend but I have to tell you I  had not idea how much Minnesotan’s love their tater tots!  Never having a tater tot that did not come out of a freezer bag, I found the Jumbo, house-made tater tots with Serrano peppers, bacon, and cheddar to be a delicious welcome to this first time Minnesota visitor. Hence, thought #1 I could live here! However, a diet of tator tots is likely not in my best interest.

imageAfter our late lunch we headed to the expo at the St. Paul River Center.  This was Leigh’s biggest marathon and marathon expo so we put a strategy in place to make sure we covered it all.   After we got our bibs, we headed to the furthest corner to start our expo journey. We were both really excited to visit the AnotherMotherRunner.com booth.  Boom! Right before our eyes it was the first booth we saw! We practically ran into as we rounded the corner.

AnotherMotherRunner.com CONNECTION! Amy ZP, JoAnne, Me, Jess, Leigh

AnotherMotherRunner.com CONNECTION! Amy ZP, JoAnn, Me, Jess, Leigh

The minute we reached the booth,it was  an instantaneous party and the beginning of our AMR CONNECTION! I can only imagine how loud we were or how this looked to the other expo visitors. JoAnn and I quickly made the connection that we had exchanged tweets days prior to the expo. Got to love social networking!  We shopped, shared stories of our AMR connections to Sarah and Dimity, took pictures, got restaurant referrals, exchanged contact info etc.  It was like we knew these ladies all our lives!  Amy ZP floored us when she  extended Leigh and I an invite to her pre-marathon dinner at her house. Despite only knowing these ladies for 15 minutes, they were no longer strangers, they were Another Mother Runners so we  we said YES!  We agreed we would firm up details Saturday via text.  JoAnn passed along some restaurant referrals for dinner and we reluctantly pulled ourselves away from the booth to explore the rest of the expo!  imageimageWe hopped in a cab to the Happy Gnome for dinner.  The Gnome, was packed,so we headed to the bar in hopes of scoring a table.  As we waited, we were so surprised when a cute Minnesotan couple tapped us on the shoulder and offered us their table. Why such kindness? They insisted we have the table so we took it.  Thought #2- I could live here people are so nice. Leigh and I were both blown away with the hospitality we had encountered over the past few hours. I had no idea how friendly Minnesotans were. Honestly, really never had a reason to think about it.  So being the good southern gals that we are we had the waiter deliver drinks to the nice couple ( who ended up sitting beside of us) to thank them.  Only to have them send a round back to us 🙂  Crazy! Full from lunch, we decided to share bacon wrapped Elk loin. Yum! The Happy Gnome was awesome its a don’t miss if you are in St. Paul.

Saturday arrived and we had no plans other than dinner with our new St. Paul friends. We shared text throughout the day and firmed up our dinner plans. Leigh and I worried what if they got caught up in the moment and invited us to dinner and now regretted it.  Little did we know the St. Paul gals were having similar conversations wondering if the Carolina girls(Leigh&I)  would really show up.

Sara and her AWESOME Sauce photo bomb. Rambling Rose Tri, Raleigh, NC

JoAnn texted Sara(AMR.com) and told her Leigh and I were coming over for dinner.  Sara’s comment, that I found highly flattering and funny was “Jenn is AWESOME-SAUCE”  Not sure what awesome-sauce is but this SUPER-FAN  will take it! Leigh and I were so excited to have dinner with the gals and their families.  Whenever one of us would get a text we would say “Is it from our new friends”  Just too funny!

We had time to kill before dinner so we decided to explore Minneapolis, by foot, since we did not rent a car. Typically, I rent a car, for some reason we opted out on this trip.  If I were to do it again, I would likely get a car.  First stop was Marshalls, which was the best Marshall’s I have ever been to.  We loaded up on awesome workout gear, which we have not been able to find in our local Marshall’s.  The best find of the day was a Life is Good Social Networking shirt for Leigh whom is an avid around town cyclist at home and whom does NO SOCIAL MEDIA. There was no passing up this shirt. SCORE!

This was made just for leigh! She bought it!

marshallsOne of my favorite all time comments from Leigh is ” Talk to MY FACE, not my FACEBOOK”  That so needs to be a bumper sticker!  Me on the other hand loves all forms of social media!   Leigh is a master shopper, so I found a nice leather chair in Marshall’s and took a social media break. I had to rest my legs…after all we were running 26.2 miles in less than 24 hours.

Next stop was the two story Target for provisions and h2omore shopping for Leigh, I forgot shopping was one of her skills:)  I got my traditional “big gulp” of water.  For some reason, part of the tradition, is I drink it straight from the bottle. I see no reason to  break tradition at this point.  After shopping we headed back to the hotel rested up and got ready for dinner with our St. Paul Friends.

We were greeted by Amy who said “Can you believe you are at a strangers house for dinner?” I stated that Leigh and I laughed about it being the setting for an Another Mother Runner murder plot. 🙂  We all laughed  at the re-telling of how Leigh and I came to be dinner guest.  Everyone was so welcoming.  We shared great food, drinks, stories, and laughs!  It was like we had known everyone for a lifetime. Thought #3- I could live here. These people are so awesome!

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end we had a big day ahead of us. We said our goodbyes and planned to hook up after the marathon for the post party at JoAnn’s. Wow! The most hospitable people I have ever met. Thought #4- I could live here! This neighborhood is precious and my neighbors would be great!

JoAnn, insisted on taking Leigh and I back to our hotel in Minneapolis (30 miles round trip).  There was no arguing this with her as she wanted to drive us along the marathon course route.  BONUS! I always drive the route and due to lack of car I had not seen any of the course.  Despite the darkness, we got a great personalized breakdown of a good portion of the course and the area. What a great night! JoAnn shared she had given AMR Sara the same course preview last year.

6:00am came to fast!  Fortunately, we were only several blocks from the Metrodome. The sun was shinning (rain was in the forecast) and temps were in the 40’s.  Perfect day for running. Finding our way to the bag check and starting coral was painless due to awesome volunteers. I did spot coffee, water, and pre-race snacks for the runners but we did not partake.

The course is just as described America’s Most Beautiful Urban Marathon! The course completely lived up to the description via TCMevents.org.

With mile after mile of parkways, lakes, rivers and tree-lined boulevards, the scenery can’t be beat. Add 300,000 screaming fans, 10 Cheer Zones, over a dozen course entertainment acts, and you’ve got an experience that you’ll never forget.

The point to point course course winds around four beautiful lakes and along both sides of the Mississippi River. The course contains a few rolling hills; but with a starting and finishing elevation of approximately 840 feet and no climbs over 100 feet long, it’s nothing you can’t handle.
The might Mississippi

The might Mississippi

The final stretch races past the clanging bells of the Saint Paul Cathedral and downhill onto the spectacular view of the State Capitol and the finish line!

The course will not disappoint!  Crowd support was HUGE! If you desire lots of support this is the marathon for you.  I would argue the crowds are bigger or equal to the Marine Corps Marathon.  There were VERY few spots without spectators. As a serenity runner, I found the crowds to be overwhelming at times. I learned to really appreciate the crowd free zones. Certainly, not meant to be a negative comment it is just based on personal preference. The course is flat.  Much flatter than I expected.  I would not classify this course as rolling hills( based on what I train on).   My hips reminded me most of the 26.2 miles I was running flat. The occasional incline was a welcome relief.  I do love to run some hills!

Thad & Eric

I spotted Eric and Thad ( Amy and Shannon’s husbands) very early whom were spectating and cheering from their bikes.  They yelled encouragement every time they saw us. It was so great. Around mile 5 we found Amy and Shannon on the course.  We pinged back and fourth and finally joined running forces somewhere in the second half.  Somewhere before the half we saw JoAnn, Holi, and Jess.  Perfect timing as I was in need of a pick me up.  As wonderful as the course , weather , and general surroundings were I was not feeling my best. Surprisingly, Leigh and I ran the majority of the race in silence (anyone who knows us finds this SHOCKING!).  We were both silently struggling but doing our best to take it all in and enjoy the experience.  We agreed early on we came too far to impose ourselves with time goals.  Our #1 goals was to finish and enjoy! That we did! I have to thank our St. Paul friends for their on course support. They were the ENJOYMENT factor! Every time we turned around they were there!  1,215 miles from home and we have our own pack of roving  fans! “Go Carolina Girls!”  I can still hear Jess ” GET DOWN!”

St. Paul & Carolina Gals!

I cannot say enough about this course. The locals embrace every aspect of the marathon weekend.  They have huge parties in their front yards with inflatables for the children.  One house had several large tents, picnic tables and were having a huge pancake breakfast! Too bad we could not stop in for some additional carbs. The mid race drizzle did not negatively impact the spirit of this event.  Rain or shine…twin Cities Marathon is a celebration!

Another Mother Runner BOND!

Another Mother Runner St. Paul and Carolina Gals!

I can honestly say what started out as an Another Mother Runner CONNECTION through the miles transitioned to an Another Mother Runner BOND! These ladies(and gents), all of them, got me through!  I am forever grateful for the memories and new friendships!

JoAnn braved the traffic and picked us up and transported us to her house for the after party celebration.  We enjoyed awesome BBQ beef, chips, sweets, etc! It was a great way to top off an awesome day!

imageAfter a great celebration, JoAnn once again insisted on taking us back to Minneapolis.  But oh no we could not go empty handed..she send us with a bottle of wine. Simply amazing! Never ending hospitality! Thought #5- I could live here. I am nice and cozy. I don’t want to leave, or for this weekend to be over.

Leigh and I were so grateful as we reflected on our Twin cities experience. I told Leigh this was a once in a life time marathon weekend experience that would be hard to top!

As I said earlier, what started as an Another Mother Connection quickly transitioned to an Another Mother Runner BOND!  The connection of runners, especially mother runners, is something very special.  Its hard to put to words…..its an experience!

Thought #6- I could live here!…. Reality, I would miss my family, and truth be told this SOUTHERN BORN and raised North Carolinian who does not even own anything close to a winter coat or snow gear would not survive the first day of fall…much less winter.  I now have some great friends in St. Paul and have a reason to visit!

Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue Volunteer Spotlight

We were honored to be the featured volunteer family for Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue in July:)

Meet The Martin Family

Jen Martin and her family began fostering for BRBR in October 2011 after adopting their Boxer Lucy from BRBR.  The Martin Family has fostered six Boxers for BRBR and is currently fostering Sam and her six babies! Here is what Jen and her family say about fostering and volunteering for BRBR: What we like about fostering for BRBR is the reward and personal satisfaction of helping a dog in need.  For us it is a family affair.  We are 4 unique individuals with varied interest and fostering is a connection point for our family.  We all share the passion and love for rescue.  I feel this is providing my children 13 and 10 valuable life lessons that will positively impact them from years to come.  For us, fostering was as simple decision…There are dogs in need! We love dogs and we want to give back. We love nurturing dogs and watching them flourish into happy healthy dogs. The personal satisfaction is worth every minute! I knew the family had caught the rescue fever when I came home from work and the family had a stray dog on a leash with them out front. I took one look at the dog and recognized the dog from two houses down, It was pretty funny!

Mom and Puppies Safe from PUPPY MILL!

Aside

samandpups

As her babies sleep with full bellies in the safety of their puppy pen, Puppy Mill Mom Sam can finally rest easy. She no longer has to wonder when her next meal will come, or if she will get fresh water today. She and her babies are no longer baking under the hot SC sun. Sam is skin and bones, she gave everything she had to her puppies who are all healthy and well. Sam will need a little more TLC and care before she is ready for adoption, along with the six other female boxers BRBR saved. They are suffering from Demodex, Corneal Ulcers, malnutrition and the effects of physical and emotional neglect and abuse in a puppy mill.

Please consider donating towards their care and help us help them. Click the link to donate.

Thank you!http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/greenville-puppy-mill-girls/68516

Sam and pups will be available for adoption via Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue. Adoptions in NC, SC, VA.

Celebration & Thanks…Reflections from Allee’s “FUR”ever Family

Our family has been volunteering with Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue for almost two years.  While it is not always easy, the joys seem to always out shine the heartaches.

Sweet Allee

Earlier this week, I received the most sincere and  heartfelt update from a former adopter, Rebecca Z, reflecting on their year with Allee.  Her update brought tears of joy to my eyes.  Rebecca and Hector are wonderful people and have provided Allee with the loving and supportive environment that she needed.  Allee’s transition was not easy but they never gave up on her!

Allee and Tango Meet!

Allee and Tango Meet!

Allee Update from Rebecca

With Memorial Day Weekend here and gone I am reminded of how we spent last Memorial Day weekend…a Saturday morning drive to Greensboro to pick up a sweet boxer named Allee for a “trial week or so” in our home, a Saturday (and Sunday) filled with rotations with Allee and resident dog Tango and feeling like those rotations would NEVER end, a girl who disliked her crate so much that she broke out of it twice on the first day. Let’s face it, a “trial” visit to our home was never going to happen…only a permanent move was in this precious girl’s future.

Here we are, a year later, more and more attached to our beloved Allee every day. We’ve had our fair share of struggles. Hector, Tango and I have each been victim to Allee’s quick bite and sharp teeth. Last year’s 4th of July was in the midst of Allee’s quarantine for biting a neighbor. Allee sometimes still has difficulty when we come across other dogs on walks, but going ona walk is one of her favorite things to do. The daily highlights far outnumber the struggles we’ve had in our first year as a family.  Allee is…a dog who can’t wait to be allowed on our bed each morning after her trip outside and a delicious breakfast; a best friend to our 3 year old male Tango; a (mostly) laid back sweet girl who just wants to please you and be by her owner’s side; a silly girl who doesn’t so much do the boxer bean, but rather jumps up and down on all 4 legs when you get home. But most of all (to us at least) Allee is a Zambrana for life.

Thank you for all you did for our beloved Allee and for all you continue to do for the countless boxers you help each day!

Rebecca

THANK YOU Rebecca and Hector for giving Allee the second chance in life that she deserves!  You all are an AMAZING family!

“FUR”ever Family Updates…Allee!

Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue foster dog updates….

Allee Girl!

Allee joined her “FUR”ever family May 26, 2012 in Charlotte, NC.  It was a perfect match with two wonderful parents and a fur-sibling Tango.  She settled in nicely and even got some one on one training from the Blue Ridge Boxer Trainer.  We are so happy for Allee!

Allee and her new family

So, our house has been quieted by 4 paws…but the other 12 keep it rock’in.  We will enjoy the down time!  It is just a matter of time before the next boxer in needs finds its way to us!

Homeless & Heartworms to Happy,Healthy and our newest Boxer Runner!

Potter is now heart worm NEGATIVE!  Yea for Potter!  We are so excited for our beautiful boxer boy who has the cutest grin and gives possibly the biggest boxer kisses ever! Potter was  given a second chance in life due to the hard working volunteers at Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue of NC, SC, VA. Read Potter’s journey!

May 2012

December 2011

Potter arrived to us as just a shell of a dog, 57lbs,  starved with his ribs and hip bones visible.  He has flourished into a healthy 79lbs and is full of energy and boxer spunk.

Potter accompanied me yesterday am for his first official run! He loved it!  We made it about 2.5 miles before I decided that was far enough for his initial journey.  Like humans they have to build up their endurance. Rex, his fur brother, can handle up to 7 miles at a time in cool temps.  I am super thrilled to have another “Boxer Runner”  in my running rotation for my early morning runs!

Potter on his 1st Boat Ride! This body made possible by the loving and caring volunteers at Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue!

Please consider adopting vs. shopping for a Pet of any kind.  There are millions of animals in need of loving and caring families all over the world.  These animals need a second chance at life!   Adopting and animal in need might be the most rewarding thing you ever do!

“Little” LIZZIE Looking for her FURever Home

My name is Lizzie!  I joined Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue in June 2012.

Don’t you wonder what those eyes have seen…

I was a stray wandering around a neighborhood.  I was very skittish and hard to catch.  A special family was worried about me and worked really hard to catch me.  They knew I was scared, hungry, and homeless.  The nice family was finally able to catch me.  They welcomed me to their family.  After 6 months, I was still very skinny despite eating daily.

34lbs upon arrival to the rescue

They cared for me as long as they could but they knew I needed medical attention that was beyond their financial means.  The kind family was so nice to contact BRBR.

Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue was able to take me in to their care in late June. They got me to the nice vet who checked me out and got me on meds for hook & whip worms, and spayed me.  I am light Heart Worm positive and will start my treatment in September.  I was skin and bones when I arrived at the vet.  My worms likely prevented me from gaining weight.  Upon arrival at the vet I was only 34lbs.  I am slowly gaining weight and looking much better.

Look close you can see my fawn markings

Despite being malnourished my coat is shiny and beautiful.  I am unique in that I look like I am black but I am not!  Boxers do not carry the gene for black coat color.  I am a “sealed brindle” which means my brindle has so many dark lines it sealsout the fawn lines making my coat appear completely black.  It is not really black, it just has excessive dark stripes. The AKC classifies me as brindle.  If you take me out in the sun light you will see all my fawn stripes/markings.  I am gorgeous and unique.  My other unique feature is that I am a tiny girl who is full grown.  Everyone mistakes me for a puppy, but I am a refined mature boxer with the  estimated age of  5-7years old.  I am the size of a typical 10-11month old Boxer puppy.  Some people call us “pocket boxers.”  I am as precious as a puppy without the puppy behavior.

Rex 71lbs and Lizzie 34lbs

I am currently living with my foster family in Raleigh, NC.  I have three fur siblings who are also rescued boxers.  Lucy, Rex, and Potter.  I also have two skin siblings a 12yr old tween girl and a 9yr old boy.  How could I forget my wonderful skin Foster Mom & Dad.  They are taking such good care of me.  I have adapted very nicely into the established Boxer Pack!

I am a sweet lovable girl.  I follow my foster mom everywhere.  We cook, clean, do laundry, etc. My mom loves to run but I am not up for that just yet.  I am with her all the time except when she is at work.  She is super special to me because she picked me up from the vet.  I was so scared that day it took her 10 minutes to get me to the car.  Back in those days, I was scared of every noise I heard and did not walk through doorways.  Also I did not like men.  I have come a long way in a matter of weeks.  While still cautious, I am not nearly as scared as I used to be.  I am making progress every day.  My foster family is very active and fast paced so I have learned to be comfortable with noise and chaos. I don’t run and hide as much anymore.  I am still working on my fears….one day at a time.  I love attention and love to be wherever my people are.  Here are some additional things you might want to know about me:

  •  I am a super sweet girl who loves to be by my humans side.
  • I am totally potty trained.100%
  • I like my Crate  I  can sleep in my crate at night (or be left out…I am so cute my humans let me sleep on the bed) I chill in my crate when my humans have to leave the house. My humans know they are spoiling me by letting me sleep on the bed with them but I am just so tiny and cute they often treat me like a baby.   I deserve a little extra attention don’t you think
  • I am started to get excited when you come home. I have not showed off the famous “boxer bean” as of yet but I am learning how to be a boxer.
  • I don’t get on the furniture in the house my parents don’t want me on the furniture in case my “new family” has the same rule.  The basement is another story….when I am with my skin siblings I can sit with them on the sofa…but only in the basement.
  • I love being with my humans and will follow them where ever they go especially my mom.  She is my favorite.  I love my Dad, he has taught me not to be scared of men.  I even great guest in our home.
  • I know my name. My foster family gave it to me.
  • I come when called.
  • I don’t dart out doors or gates.
  • I like all dogs that I have met.  I don’t really know how to play but I am learning.  I have a little more spunk every day.
  • I don’t really like being outside (probably since I was forced to be in the elements as a stray) However, I will chill outside with the other dogs.  I love being inside the comfort of the house.  It is not as scary.
  • My parents have only heard me bark twice…don’t be fooled by my size it is a BIG bark.
  • *Here are some things I am learning*:
  • I have not really had the need to use the Potty Bell to go outside.  I just
  • sit at the door.
  • I will whine to remind my people it is time to eat. I don’t miss a meal.  They are fattening me up with dry puppy food mixed with can food.  I am really fond of can food. They hope to wean me when I get up to my ideal weight.
  • I am slowly learning how to play with balls, fuzzy animals, dog toys , etc.  I am attached to a very long stuffed snake with squeakers in it.  I carry it around like it is prey, or one of my puppies.  I even try to hide it to keep it safe.  My humans love watching me with the snake.
  • Rex, Potter, Lizzie, Lucy…Loving their second chance at life.

I am learning to play with my FURsiblings. They try to engage me in play but I typically ignore them.  Every once in a while, I will play.  My humans think after I get my heartworm treatment I will be more playful.  I love my fur siblings I am just not up for their “Boxer” play yet.  The first time my humans saw me wag my tail was when they introduced me to my fur siblings.  I love them and want to play with them.

  • I have not spent a lot of time on a leash as I am still cautious and scared.  My humans will try more walks we me as I gain confidence.  I have done very well on the leash when I have had to be on one.

I am a super sweet beautiful girl.  I am as precious as a puppy without all the puppy craziness.  I would be the perfect addition to a home with kids, dogs, maybe cats etc.  I would also be good as an only dog.  Please consider giving me a FURever home.  You will not regret it!

Love and Kisses……LIZZIE

Welcome Back Kotter….woops! Welcome Back POTTER!

Could not resist the title given I am a product of the 70’s!  We are not Welcoming Back Kotter, we are welcoming back POTTER!  Our second and most beloved foster dog.

Potter's shelter intake photo 11/12

Potter initially arrived at the Martin Boxer compond in December 2011.  He was picked up as a stray in Gastonia, NC (11/29).  He was extremely underweight 57lbs, Heart Worm positive, respiratory infection, and fully intact.  My guess is someone was using him as a stud for breading. Blue Ride Boxer sent me his photo and there was no discussion amongst the family we had to save this precious pup.  Even if it meant having 4 dogs.  We were thrilled we had the opportunity to name him so we polled all our Facebook and Twitter friends and named him Potter. Harvey was a close second along with Fozzie.  We think Potter was perfect!

After a brief stay at the Vet, Potter was transported to to us 12/3- He was so sweet upon arrival.  Within an hour of his arrival all dogs were running around/co cohabitating nicely.  I was amazed how the introduction that can be up to 24 hours beyond happened within an hour.  He was that laid back.  It was Maple (our first fosters) last night with us as she got adopted the next day.
Our job was to love this dog unconditionally and fatten him up.  He was too skinny for surgery to be neutered or start his life saving heart worm treatment.  We fattened him up to 70.8 lbs enough to go for neutering.  He did great!  After a series of meds and a little more fattening up he was ready to start his heart worm treatment in January.  Heart Worm treatment is horrible for all involved!  Remember that monthly pill for prevention!  Potter had to be on bed rest for three months.  That is a very difficult thing to do for a 2 year old dog, whom gained strength everyday and had to watch his  two  fur siblings running around and play.  We/He made it through with flying colors!
Potter was spoken for early on by a wonderful family.  He could not be released until he finished all his treatments.  We enjoyed everyday we had with this sweet boy (96 to be exact)  While he was with us he learned what it was like to be inside a house, what toys were, how to play.  When he first arrived he was a loner.  He preferred sitting outside on the deck.  He was not sure what to do inside of the house.  Once we forgot he was outside and when we went to look for him he had burrowed himself down in a bed of leaves to stay warm.  Heartbreaking ( he was not outside long). We are sure he was displaying some of his survival techniques he used while he was a stray.  Someone trained and loved this dog at some point in his life.  He was so well behaved and was 100% potty trained.  Never did he have an accident in the house.  He would not enter the house unless you told him it was ok and he did not jump on you.  We could not find anything wrong with this dog.  Why did someone abandon this sweet guy.  We knew he would be the perfect companion for a loving family.

Potter's Flashy Smile!

As we watched his progression from a “loner”  to a social playful pup we ALL fell in love with this guy. We knew his adoption was looming and we were going to have to say good bye.  We ALL agreed it was going to be very hard.  To this day we  are not sure why but this guy really stole our hearts.  However, in the true spirit of rescue, as we have come to know it, we love them and pass them along so we can make room for the next dog in need.  Our next dog in need was  Allee, whom would join us once Potter & Bridget went to their FURever families.

Potter and Bridget hold paws on the way to their adoption 3/9/2012!

When I received the call on Tuesday that Potter was being surrendered back to the rescue (due to unfortunate family circumstances) There was no discussion or decisions to be made.  Potter was coming home!  We were all elated and were counting down the days until his arrival.  Potter officially joined the Martin Boxer Crew on Saturday!  Our first official “foster failure” a.k.a…a foster dog you cannot give up.  We are at maximum canine capacity but still have room to host a foster dog.
Fostering/Rescuing has been a wonderful “family bonding”  experience for us.  Like most families we are very busy with numerous daily obligations and many varied opinions on life.  However, fostering/rescuing is the  “ONE” thing we all seem to agree on unanimously.
We love it!  It works for our family!  As long as it works for the family, we will keep it up!
